A possible collaborative project between New Zealand and The Kingdom of
Tonga Ship for World Youth Alumni Associations.

The New Zealand Ship for World Youth Alumni Association are selecting
four to six New Zealand born Tongans or Pacific Youth for an
international cultural exchange to the Kingdom of Tonga for two weeks. The Tongan
Ship for World Youth Alumni Association will match them with young
people of the same age group in Tonga. As a component of the programme the
participants will be required to begin a pen pal relationship.

They will stay with the host family for two weeks and take part in a
local programme. The Theme of the programme is aimed towards connecting
or reconnecting with, Tongan cultural heritage. The Participating Youth
will be accompanied by a National leader (NL) who will be a member from
the New Zealand Ship for World Youth Alumni Associations.

There is an opportunity for two international participants (IP) who
belong to the Renaissance network* to be invited to take part in the
cultural exchange programme as part of a meaningful holiday**. This
invitation is also open to staff of the IYEO. The IP’s will be required to
finance their, own travel costs. The associations will assist with
accommodation and activities.

The project has evolved from the discussions between the NZ delegation
and the Tongan delegation at the 21st Century Renaissance Youth Leaders
Invitation Programme 2004 Tokyo, Japan Oct 7- Oct 20 2004.

A process of review and evaluation with both delegations and Alumni’s

==============================

Dear Friends,

Global Xchange is a partnership between Voluntary Service Overseas
(VSO), the British Council and Community Service Volunteers (CSV) who
are equally committed to the idea that International Volunteer
Exchanges can help develop active global citizens, who are committed
to working for positive change and can positively impact local
communities in the UK and overseas. In the Philippines, it is being
implemented through VSO Philippines, VSO Bahaginan and the British
Council country office.

Global Xchange is an exchange programme that brings young people
(18-25 years of age) from the UK and from southern countries to live
alongside each other and work together for six months (3 months in the
southern country and 3 months in the UK) as volunteers so they can
share their learning with each other and their host communities. The
programme has been developed out of a highly successful VSO exchange
programme called 'World Youth'. The main objectives of the programme
are as follows:
- To involve young people in voluntary work and to encourage them to
have a positive approach to volunteering;
- To increase their understanding of other cultures; and
- To develop themselves and their skill base.

Teams are made up of 18 young people - 9 from the UK matched with 9
from a southern country - and are supported by a Project Supervisor
from each country. Volunteers live with host families in a host
community, and work as volunteers with community work placements. They
do not earn money while on the programme, but programme expoenses are
covered (food, accommodation, travel and medical insurance, etc.).
Global Xchange is being implemented with partners in the following
countries: Uzbekistan, Kazakhastan, Nigeria, Indonesia and the
Philippines.

We hope that you could assist us in the dissemination of this
information through your own social network of individuals,
organisations and institutions. We would like you to encourage active
young people in your community, school and organisations to apply and
to take part in this international cross-cultural learning experience.
And hopefully, they would come out as more mature people with a better
understanding of the world.

Thank you very much.
